Several recent reviews of this family have been produced. The following list owes much to an extensive phylogenetic analysis of 24 taxa based on full mtDNA (cytochrome b) sequences#R.

  • Large, heavy seabirds with very long wings, long, heavy bill and "tubenose".
  • Circumpolar in Southern Ocean, with outposts in North Pacific.
  • Marine and pelagic.
  • 71-135 cm.
  • 4 genera, 22 species, 24 taxa.
  • 15 species threatened;
    none extinct since 1600.
