Media notes
A bird on the ground. Published in HBW Volume 12 on page 675. Original HBW caption: The Ground Tit looks more like a babbler (Timaliidae), or a groundjay (Podoces) than a parid. The latter resemblance was enshrined in its taxonomic placement in the crows (Corvidae), and its traditional English name of “Hume’s Groundjay”, alternatively “Hume’s Groundpecker”. The mystery of its true relationships was solved in 2003 by an extensive analysis of osteology, DNA and vocal characters. It is in fact an aberrant tit, with a long, decurved bill, long legs and large feet. These features are adaptations to terrestrial foraging on the treeless steppes of Tibet and south China. Elevation: 3454 m. Date added to IBC: June 21, 2016.
