Identification

A small pale hawk restricted to Sulawesi and nearby islands. Adult has a pale gray head, a bright yellow mark between bill and eye, and conspicuous white tail spots. Chest is salmon pink and belly white. Immatures are bright rufous above with bold white spots on tail and cream-colored underparts with heavy streaking. Usually found singly in tall forest in lowlands and hills. Typically located perched in upperstory when calling. At all ages, note diagnostic white tail spots, unlike all other local hawks. Vocal, giving a unique, strident call: “ki-ki-ki-ke-ke-ko.” Also gives a soft “mow.”
