Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A mid-sized coucal of the lowlands. All black with a dark eye. Found in forest edge, scrub and grassland. Skulking, but not as difficult to see as some other coucals and sometimes sits out on an exposed branch to call or dry off after rain. Similar to Pheasant Coucal, but Lesser Black Coucal has plain black wings with no barring and a dark eye. Call a series of descending “hoop” notes. Pairs often duet.
