Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

The only penguin in Galápagos. Small with a white belly. Adult has a dark horseshoe on breast and sides, and a white line that starts behind the eye and circles down to the throat; young birds lack these features. When swimming on the surface of the water, it may vaguely resemble a loon or duck. Usually stays close to shore, and rests on rocky outcrops, where several may congregate. Unafraid of humans and often swims quite close to snorkeling tourists.
