Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A rotund, short-legged ground-dwelling dove that usually runs rather than flies when startled. Male has a dark body with an iridescent pinkish-purple shoulder patch, a cream-colored chest, and a gray head. Female has a ruddy head and chest with olive back and wings. Juvenile is entirely dark brown. Prefers mature primary forest, apparently up to 1000 meters of elevation. Vocalizations poorly known, but include a typical dove-like repeated and accelerating “whoot whoot whoot.”
