Birds of South Asia: The Ripley Guide

Pamela C. Rasmussen , John C. Anderton
Publisher: Lynx Edicions , Smithsonian Institution
$95.00

The most complete and up-to-date guide to the birds of the region. Includes much previously unpublished data on identification, distributions, vocalizations and taxonomy, along with critical re-appraisal of historic information. Species lists follow familiar Peters order except where changes are well-corroborated by recent research.

Vol. 1 (Field Guide): Covers all South Asian birds (including for the first time Afghanistan and Chagos).

180 plates illustrating over 3400 plumages, with ID notes and scientifically verified over 1430 all-new annotated colour maps opposite plates, showing seasonal distributions including migration routes. Maps include distribution of species in surrounding areas, mainly Tibet and western and central Myanmar.

Vol. 2 (Morphology, distribution, vocalizations and taxonomy): Describes over 2500 taxa, including all 1428 species recorded for the region.

Includes all accepted races and two species new to science, over 25 recent species-splits. Establishes region’s first hypothetical list and vocalizations described in detail for nearly all species. Sonagrams presented for almost 900 species.
