Introduction

The Green-barred Woodpecker is a widespread inhabitant of eastern and southern South America. It is predominantly yellowish green, with barred wing coverts and rump, and sports a black forehead with a red hindcrown; the three southern subspecies, which formerly were considered a separate species ("Golden-breasted" Woodpecker), are larger with whiter bellies. These woodpeckers inhabit a variety of habitats from lowland forest to Andean desert scrub. Green-barred Woodpecker feeds almost exclusively on ants, but also consumes some cactus fruits and berries. Most often found foraging in the lower and middle sections of trees, Green-barred Woodpecker can at times be seen in groups with the larger and more wary Campo Flicker (Colaptes campestris) feeding on ants on the ground.
