Hitherto treated as conspecific with D. ignipectus and D. beccarii (along with D. luzoniense). Differs from first of those in lack of red breast in male (3); greyer, less glossy green-blackish head sides and presence of pale submoustachial area in male (2); buffy-tan underparts without yellowish tinge and with paler, weaker olive-toned flanks (1); longer bill (mean male 11.5 mm, although n=3, vs 10.0 in closest populations of nominate ignipectus; allow 2); and song without higher-pitched alternating strophe (maximum frequency < 8 kHz vs 8–10 kHz; at least 2)#R. Differs from D. beccarii in its buffy-whitish vs yellowish-tan underparts in male (2); pale submoustachial line in male (1); buffy vs greenish central underparts in female (3); slightly shorter wings and tail (1); slightly longer bill (ns); different song (but n=1 for beccarii). Proposed race umbratile (from Kao Kuap, in SE Thailand) is a synonym. Appears to share same range as Myiomela cambodiana (split in this volume); whether parapatric with D. ignipectus merits study. Monotypic.
