Roraiman Nightjar Setopagis whitelyi Scientific name definitions

Roraiman Nightjar is confined to the pantepui region of southeast Venezuela and adjacent southwest Guyana. This species is very similar in its overall plumage pattern to the much more widespread and numerous Blackish Nightjar (Nyctipolus nigrescens), and both formerly were classified together in the genus Caprimulgus; but the songs of the two species are very different, genetic evidence reveals that they are not closely related, and Blackish and Roraiman nightjars now are placed in different genera. Compared to the very poorly known tepui subspecies of Band-winged Nightjar (Systellura longirostris roraimae), Roraiman Nightjar is slightly smaller, lacks the tawny hindneck collar, and has more restricted white markings in the wings and tail. Roraiman Nightjar generally occurs at higher elevations than Blackish Nightjar, being known from 1030–1800 m, where it inhabits forests and generally wooded country. Otherwise almost nothing is known regarding the natural history of this species of nightjar.
