Hitherto treated as conspecific with D. sanguinolentum and D. hanieli, but differs from latter in characters given under that species (below). Differs from former (above) in its all-red vs orange-buff throat in male (3); stronger black ventral stripe (1); pale grey vs buff-tan belly in male and entire underparts in female (2); shorter (effect size −1.8), deeper (effect size 3.7) bill (1+2=3); apparently very different voice, but samples too small to be sure that recorded calls are homologous#R. Monotypic.
