Affinities uncertain. Hitherto considered conspecific with P. superbus but here split on account of its purplish lower breast shading into a bluish-black ventral band vs pure grey lower breast divided sharply from bluish-black ventral band (3); duller rusty mantle and neck-sides, but area extending up nape to about the purple hindcrown (rather than fading into green of cheek that extends around the back of the purple hindcrown) (2); crown of female purplish like male vs green shading to dark blue at rear (3). Monotypic.
