(?syn. Anser) Gr. intensive prefix α- a- ; νασσα nassa  duck (cf. L. anas, anatis  duck). Rafinesque 1815, Analyse, 72, coined this name for a group of wildfowl (Serrirostria, sub-family Anserinia), but later in ornithology anassa (< Gr. ανασσα anassa  queen) is always used in the sense of ‘heron.’
