Although the Malabar Pied Hornbill was selected as type species, plate XLIX of Reichenbach 1849 clearly shows the black casque markings of a Sunda Pied Hornbill A. albirostris convexus. "Anthracoceros Reichenbach, Av. Syst. Nat. [1849], pl. XLIX. No species; generic details only. Type, by subsequent designation, Buceros malabaricus Gmelin. (Elliot, Monogr.
