ANTHRACOCEROS

(Bucerotidae; Ϯ Malabar Pied Hornbill A. coronatus) Gr. ανθραξ anthrax, ανθρακος anthrakos  coal black; κερας keras, κερως kerōs   horn. Although the Malabar Pied Hornbill was selected as type species, plate XLIX of Reichenbach 1849 clearly shows the black casque markings of a Sunda Pied Hornbill A. albirostris convexus. "Anthracoceros Reichenbach, Av. Syst. Nat. [1849], pl. XLIX. No species; generic details only. Type, by subsequent designation, Buceros malabaricus Gmelin. (Elliot, Monogr. Bucerot., pt. 10, 1882, p. xvi [= intro., p. xvi of volume]). Not Anthracocera Agassiz, 1846, Lepidoptera."
