Ascalaphus

(syn. Asio Ϯ Long-eared Owl A. otus) Gr. ασκαλαφος askalaphos  bird mentioned by Aristotle, usually identified as a sort of owl; "Ascalaphus auritus, Long-eared Owl.   Ascalaphus subauritus, Short-eared Owl." (Morris 1837) (OD per Björn Bergenholtz).
