Anas Ϯ Mallard A. platyrhynchos) L. boscas, boscadis or boscis, boscidis  duck  < Gr. βοσκας boskas, βασκας baskas, or φασκας phaskas  wild duck (cf. specific name Anas boschas Linnaeus, 1758 (= syn. Anas platyrhynchos)); "The precise point of junction between the Pin-tails and that group which was known to the ancients by the name of  BOSCHAS  has not yet been explained. Under this subgenus we comprehend all those ducks usually denominated Teals, together with the Mallard, long domesticated in our poultry yards" (Swainson 1831).
