(syn. Columba Ϯ Stock Dove C. oenas) Gr. κοιλος koilos  hollow (i.e. treehole-nesting); τρηρων trērōn, τρηρωνος trērōnos  pigeon  < τρεω treō  to flee in fear; "Genus Coelotreron Heine  [Palumboena (!) Bp. 1854]" (Heine 1890).
