(syn. Anas Ϯ Northern Pintail A. acuta) "DAFILA.  PINTAIL.   ...DAFILA. Leach in Brit. Mus. Collection.  THE Pintail is readily distinguished from the other genera of this stirps by the superior length of its tail  ...its beak is narrower than in the Shoveler, and longer than that of the Wigeons and Teals" (Stephens 1824); said to be a Brazilian name for some sort of duck, but this is rejected by Coues 1882. “The practice of coining nonsense names, such as Viralva, Dafila, Assiminea, Azeca, &c., originated with Dr. Leach” (Strickland 1841). Var. Daphila.
