(syn. Lalage Ϯ Long-tailed Triller L. leucopyga) Gr. διαφορος diaphoros  different  < διαφορεω diaphoreō  to disperse  < διαφερω diapherō  to carry across; πτερον pteron  wing; "The genus Symmorphus Gould [1837] is preoccupied in Hymenoptera by Symmorphus Wesmaël [1833], and may be replaced by Diaphoropterus (διαφορος, differens, and πτερον, ala), its type being Symmorphus leucopygus Gould." (Oberholser 1899).
