(syn. Dicrurus Ϯ Ribbon-tailed Drongo D. megarhynchus) Gr. δικρανον dikranon  pitchfork  < δικρανος dikranos  two-headed; στρεπτος streptos  curved, twisted  < στρεφω strephō  to twist. Reichenbach's 1850, plate LXXXVIII, labelled Hirundineae: Trogoninae et Dicrurinae, shows the distinctive lengthened outer tail-feathers of the Ribbon-tailed Drongo. "Dicranostreptus Reichenbach, 1850, Av. Syst. Nat., pl. 88, fig. 12. Figure of generic details, no species included. Type, by subsequent designation, Edolius megarhynchus Quoy and Gaimard (G. R. Gray, 1855, Cat. Gen. Subgen. Birds, p. 58)." (Vaurie in Peters 1962, XV, 138).
