(Phasianidae; Ϯ Red Junglefowl G. gallus) L. gallus  cockerel, farmyard cock; "Gallus. Genus 3.  ...  **1. LE COQ ET LA POULE. Gallus versicolor. . . .GALLUS DOMESTICUS.  GALLINA DOMESTICA." (Brisson 1760): based on "Gallus", "Gallus Gallinaceus", and "Gallina" of Gessner 1555, and numerous other authors; "Gallus Brisson, Orn. 1, 1760, p. 26, 166. Type, by tautonymy, "Gallus" = Phasianus gallus Linné." (Peters 1934, II, 118). The Red Junglefowl is the wild ancestor from which all domestic chickens are derived.
