(syn. Aratinga Ϯ Dusky-headed Parakeet A. weddellii) Gr. γυμνος gumnos  bare, naked; ωψ ōps, ωπος ōpos  eye; ψιττακος psittakos  parrot; "Gymnopsittacus nobis (2) com aquelles caratéres, porém com a cauda desegual, o bico elevado, espesso e fórte, tomia grandemente entalhada; tarsos curtos, menores que o pellegar (excl. a unha).  —  Especie typica: G. weddelli, co-typo C. cactorum.   ...   (2) Gymos [sic], nú,  ops — olhos  psittacus, periquito.  ...  Gymnopsittacus gen, nov.  ...  Região periophthalmica largamente núa, sendo a pelle rugosa." (Ribeiro 1922); "Gymnopsittacus Ribeiro, Rev. Mus. Paulista, 12, 1920, pt. 2, p. 9, 26. Type, by original designation,2 G. weddelli = Conurus weddellii Deville.  ...  2 Ribeiro's exact wording is "Especies typica: G. weddelli, co-typo C. cactorum." In order that no controversy may arise as to the type I herewith designate Conurus weddellii Deville as type of the genus Gymnopsittacus." (Peters 1937, III, 185).
