Turnix Ϯ Madagascan Buttonquail T. nigricollis) Gr. ἡμιποδιον hēmipodion  half-foot  < ἡμι- hēmi-  half-, small  < ἡμισυς hēmisus  half; ποδιον podion  foot  < dim. πους pous, ποδος podos  foot; "TURNIX. - HEMIPODIUS. (MIHI.)  ...  PIEDS, à tarse long; seulement trois doigts devant, entièrement divisés, point de doigt postérieur" (Temminck 1820).
