(syn. Ploceus Ϯ Lesser Masked Weaver P. intermedius) Gr. ὑπο hupo  somewhat, related to; genus Sitagra Reichenbach, 1850, weaver; "Subgenus Hypositagra Subg. nov.  ... Resembling Sitagra Reichenbach, s. str., in all respects, except for being larger and usually breeding in small colonies; nests with more or less pronounced entrance tube.  Type, here designated, Ploceus intermedius Rüppell, 1845" (Wolters 1970).
