(syn. Tangara Ϯ Silvery-breasted Tanager T. cyanomelaena) Gr. ὑπο hupo  somewhat; θλυπις thlupis  unknown small bird, perhaps some sort of finch. In ornithology thlypis signifies either a parulid warbler or, as in this case, a thin-billed tanager. "2. Hypothlypis (Tanagrella (!) Sws. 1837)  ...  Bei Einführung des Namens Tanagra hat Linné selbst gegen die von ihm für die Nomenclatur gegeben Gesetze verstossen" (Cabanis 1847).
