Melanocichla lugubris  ...  General colour above and below blackish slate-colour; the crown, lores, sides of face, feathers below and round the eye, cheeks, ear-coverts, and throat deeper black, the ear-coverts paling off into blackish slate-colour like the sides of the neck" (Sharpe 1883).
