Nesochen

(syn. Branta Ϯ Hawaiian Goose B. sandvicensis) Gr. νησος nēsos  island (= Hawaii); χην khēn, χηνος khēnos  goose; "d1. Webs of the feet deeply excised. . . . .19. NESOCHEN, p. 126.  ...  19. NESOCHEN.  Nesochen, Salvad. MS. . . . Type N. sandvicensis.  Range. Confined to the Sandwich Islands." (Salvadori 1895). The Hawaiian Goose or Néné was brought back from the edge of extinction by the success of captive breeding stocks, and has now been re-introduced to the island of Hawaii.
