Noddi

● (syn. Anous Ϯ Brown Noddy A. stolidus) "8º Sterne cendré (S.G. Noddi)" (Neboux 1840). Doubtless based on “Noddi” of de Buffon 1770-1781. Noddy was a name given to these tropical terns by 16th century seamen, who thought their fearless behaviour and indifference to man bordered on stupidity (e.g. Catesby 1731, wrote, “The Noddy  ... They are stupid birds, and like the booby will suffer themselves to be laid hands on, and taken from off the yards or parts of ships on which they alight”).
● (syn. Larosterna Ϯ Inca Tern L. inca) "Jénero. - NODDI. Cuv.   222. Noddi Inca, Less.  Monja.  Gay, p. 486" (Philippi 1869).
