(syn. Cyclopsitta Ϯ Double-eyed Fig Parrot C. diophthalma) Gr. οπος opos  fig-juice; Mod. L. psitta  parrot  < Gr. ψιττακη psittake  parrot; "3. Opopsitta diophthalma.  [Mus. Brit.] [Wallace.]   4.[Opopsitta] desmaresti.  [Mus. Brit.] [Wallace.]" (P. Sclater 1860); "Cyclopsitta, Jacq. et Pucher., Voy. Pole Sud. Zool. III, p. 107 (1853) . . . . .Typus: Psittacula diophthalma, Hombr. et Jacq.   Opopsitta, Sclat.1, P.Z.S. 1860, p. 227 . . . . .Typus: Psittacula diophthalma, Hombr. et Jacq.   ...   (1) Non sono riuscito a scoprire la ragione per cui lo Sclater abbia voluto sostituire il nome Opopsitta all' altro più antico Cyclopsitta." (Salvadori 1880); "Opopsitta Sclater, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1860, p. 227. Type, by subsequent designation, Psittacula diophthalma Hombron and Jacquinot. (Salvadori, Orn. Pap. Mol., 1, 1880, p. 149.)" (Peters 1937, III, 164). Sclater's paper gave no indication that he wished to provide a new name for these parrots, and it has been suggested that Opopsitta is merely a lapsus for Cyclopsitta (see Mathews 1916/1917, Bds. Australia, VI, 63-64) (see Cyclopsitta).
