Thalasseus Ϯ Greater Crested Tern T. bergii) Gr. πελεκαν pelekan, πελεκανος pelekanos  pelican; πους pous, ποδος podos  foot; "Genus Pelecanopus Wagl., Scharbenschwalbe.  (Genus novum.)  Wesentliches äußeres Kennzeichen: pollex interno-transversalis, cum digito indice palama ut in Halieis et Pelecanis connexus.  Hierher: Sterna pelecanoïdes King Voy. to New. Holland. Appendix." (Wagler 1832).  Var. Pelicanopus, Pelanopus.
