(syn. Phoenicopterus Ϯ American Flamingo P. ruber) Gr. φοινιξ phoinix, φοινικος phoinikos  crimson, red; ερωδιος erōdios  heron; "Figure 7 exhibits the bill of the Florida species (kindly sent me by Professor Baird), which is robust in its general form  ...  This species may constitute a distinct subgenus under the appellation of Phœnicorodias" (G. Gray 1869).
