PINAROCORYS

(Alaudidae; Ϯ Dusky Lark P. nigricans) Gr. πιναρος pinaros  dirty, shabby; Mod. L. corys  lark  < Gr. κορυδος korudos  crested lark  < κορυς korus, κορυθος koruthos  helmet; "I have restricted the genus Mirafra to birds in which the sexes are similar in plumage and the upper parts always mottled. I therefore propose the new generic name Pinarocorys for the reception of Alauda nigricans, Sundev., and Alauda erythropygia, Strickl., in which the coloured pattern of the wings is very dissimilar in the males and females, and the crown and back uniform [brown] in old birds" (Shelley 1902); "Pinarocorys Shelley, 1902, Birds Africa, 3, p. 15 (in text), p. 71. Type, by subsequent designation, Alauda nigricans Sundevall (Bianchi, 1907 (1906)), Bull. Acad. Imp. Sci. St. Pétersbourg (5), 25, p. 12)." (Peters 1960, IX, 3).
