Sapheopipo

(syn. Dendrocopos Ϯ Okinawa Woodpecker D. noguchii) Gr. σαφης saphēs, σαφεος sapheos  distinct; πιπω pipō  woodpecker; "Wing very long and pointed; tail only equal to the second primary and falling short of the longest by about an inch.   ...   SAPHEOPIPO.  Type S. noguchii." (Hargitt 1890). The Okinawa Woodpecker is a critically endangered species confined to a few protected sites on the island of Okinawa, Japan.
