(syn. Apteryx Ϯ Little Spotted Kiwi A. owenii) Gr. στικτος stiktos  spotted, dappled  < στιζω stizō  to tattoo; genus Apteryx Shaw, 1813, kiwi; "Stictapteryx, gen. nov.  Type Apteryx owenii Gould.  Internal features of generic value have been cited, as well as the external ones, and also variations in ptilosis." (Iredale & Mathews 1926).
