French name Tadorne for a shelduck (Tadorne de Belon is the Common Shelduck)  < Mid. French names Tadorne and Tadourne for a type of duck. According to BOU 1915 “Tadorna” is an Italian word; ex “Tadorna” or “Vulpanser” of Willughby 1676, “Bergander,” “Sheldrake” or “Burrough-Duck” of Ray 1676, and Albin 1731, “Anas albo-variegata, pectoris lateribus ferrugineis, abdomine longitudinaliter cinereo-maculato” of Linnaeus 1746, and “Anas Tadorna dicta” of Linnaeus 1747 (Tadorna).
