Media notes
Lowland brown-headed brown form foraging in a tree. While a single light-grey plumage form is found on Mauritius, Z. b. borbonicus is composed of four distinct geographic forms on Réunion: a brown-headed brown form (western lowlands) , a grey-headed brown form (northern and eastern lowlands), a brown-naped brown form (southern and southeastern lowlands), and polymorphic highland form, with grey and brown birds living in sympatry. The colour variants on Réunion were first described as different species or as individual, age or sex variants, and then as endemic subspecies (FB Gill, Ornithological Monograph, 1973). Recent data reveal a high degree of divergence between populations in Mauritius and Réunion, which might in fact constitute two separate species, as well as high levels of structure within the island of Réunion suggesting that diversification on Réunion has likely evolved in situ in the past 4-500kyr (Mila et 2010, BMC Evolutionary Biology). Elevation: 36 m. Date added to IBC: June 21, 2016.
