Dorsal view of a bird eating berries in a tree. Published in HBW Volume 14 on page 537. Original HBW caption: The feeding habits of the Sichuan Jay have been little studied. This bird may be collecting berries to cache them, although such behaviour does not appear to have been recorded in this species. The congeneric Grey Jay (Perisoreus canadensis), is a prodigious hoarder of excess food, and in Alaska, a single bird may make more than 1000 caches in a single summer day, and a total of 100,000 during summer and autumn. The Sichuan Jay probably has the enlarged salivary glands which are used by the other two species in this genus to coat and stick hoarded food to the bark of trees. Original IBC location name and coordinates: Sichuan (30.278,103.14). Elevation: 1092 m. Date added to IBC: June 21, 2016.
