Media notes
First record of Silvery Pigeon in captivity. The critically endangered Silvery Pigeon (Columba argentina) Silvery pigeon is one of the most threatened species of pigeon in the world. It was missing and believed extinct for 76 years before being rediscovered in Mentawai islands off the west-coast of Sumatra in 2008. Subsequently there have been a handful of more sightings in this area. In October 2016 I "discovered" two captive Silvery Pigeons at the educational zoo where I work, at the Nias Heritage Museum (Museum Pusaka Nias) in Gunungsitoli, Nias Island. The birds had been donated to the museum by locals and misidentified as Pied Imperial Pigeons. This is a first record for Silvery Pigeons on Nias Island and a surprising discovery as Nias is among the most heavily cleared islands west of Sumatra. After input from several international bird experts a large custom made aviary is being constructed at the Museum, creating a more comfortable environment for the birds. The new aviary could potentially be used to start a regulated, captive breeding project. Elevation: 161 m. Date added to IBC: October 26, 2016.
