Sumatran Partridge Arborophila sumatrana

A small rotund gamebird of Sumatra’s western and southern montane and foothill regions, south of the Batak Highlands. Inhabits broadleaf evergreen forests at 500-2000 meters. Like most other Arborophila partridges, can be quite vocal; this species gives a long-winded and rapidfire rising series of whistled “wew” notes. Pairs often participate in duets. Difficult to see; if seen, note the dark head, neat white spot behind the eye, brown-and-black back, and gray breast. Forages on the forest floor singly, in pairs, or in small groups. Compare with Roll’s Partridge (ranges don’t overlap).
