Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A fairly large, dark gray goshawk with deep rufous underparts, including barred thighs on adults. Yellow eyes, bill base, and legs. Immature blotchy brown above with thick barring below. Inhabits forest from lowlands to mountains. Does not soar; mostly seen perched. Adult differs from adult Rufous-necked Sparrowhawk and Variable Goshawk in its lack of a rufous collar, and in its darker rufous underside. Moluccan Goshawk is considerably larger than Chinese Sparrowhawk, and adults are darker on upperparts, underparts, and underwing. Immatures differ from immatures of Rufous-necked Sparrowhawk and Variable and Meyer’s Goshawks in being barred instead of streaked. Gives a loud, penetrating, accelerating series of whistles, “kwe-ke-ke-ke-ke-ke-ke.”
