Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

A large chunky barbet with a pale bill, red crown and apricot belly-patch. Variable, some authorities consider it two species; western populations are mostly brownish on the face, while those farther east have contrasting dark upperparts and white underparts. Immatures are duller. Pairs are resident in woodland, riverine forest and gardens, where they are unobtrusive. Calls a harsh “krek” and a trilled toy-like buzzing similar to Broad-billed Roller.
