Look for its conspicuous yellow rump. Northern population has yellow slash on the shoulder, which southern population lacks. Also note difference in eye color. Pairs or small flocks are uncommon in cloud forest from around 1,800–3,100 m, higher than any similar caciques. Sometimes joins groups of jays or tanagers.
