A thick-set, short-tailed parrot with green wings, a red body, and a black cap. White patch on back of head is diagnostic but often difficult to observe. The red underside is the most reliable identification feature, especially as the species is mostly commonly seen in flight. More dependent on forest than Purple-bellied Lory, and less likely to be seen on coconut plantations. Distinguished from that species by the lack of a purple belly. Call is a musical whistled “sweeet,” unlike the nasal shrieking of Purple-bellied Lory.
