Ethan Winning | the Internet Bird Collection

In 2000, I stored all of my SLR equipment, bought my first digital camera, and started actively photographing birds. With the Canon "point-and-shoot" cameras (up to my present SX40), I photographed birds, mammals, insects (especially dragonflies and butterflies) posted and continue posting them to my web site. I have been retired for two years which leaves me plenty of time to hike my favorite hills in the 2726 acres of Walnut Creek Open Space, oak woodlands, the Pacific Flyway and home to about 90 species. And I'm within 6 miles of a salt marsh and fresh water estuary, and 10 miles from the many preserves on the San Francisco Bay. I also tend to 23 Western Bluebird nesting boxes in the Open Space - although about a third are occupied by Oak titmice, Tree Swallows, Bullock's Orioles, Violet-green Swallows, Ash-throated Flycatchers, and Bewick's and House Wrens. Their mating seasons coincide, though that doesn't make it easier to get good shots of some very private birds. But, it's great being retired. All birds are wild, and I do not photograph birds being tagged. I've learned their habits which gives me an advantage that offsets the disadvantage of a point-and-shoot camera.
