Male Australasian Darter drying its wings. The Australasian Darter Anhinga novaehollandiae is a relatively common waterbird in lakes, rivers, estuaries and on the coast. Male Darters are almost all black, while females have a pale belly and a lighter brown back. This male Darter was resting on beached seagrass wrack on Penguin Island off the coast of Perth, drying its wings and preening. With it on the seagrass are several Silver Gulls. Elevation: 11 m.
