Media notes
Bird stoops to find and consume a crab at the water's edge. Gull-billed tern are rare in New Zealand. It appears that the subspecies that reaches New Zealand is still being debated so I may have to change this at some stage!. Elevation: 0 m. Date added to IBC: June 23, 2016.
Observation details
IBC scientific name: Gelochelidon macrotarsa. Bird identified by a birder at the sight. The birder claimed that only a handful are observed in New Zealand annually. The bird was first identified by its hovering and scooping behaviour (captured in the video). The value of image verification especially for rare sightings is clear. Two individuals were observed on the day. No vocalisation detected. The bird was not next to a species with which I am familiar so I could not acurately assess its size.
