A Brown (Subantarctic) Skua sitting in a puddle – drinking and preening. The race of the Brown Skua known as the Subantarctic Skua (Catharacta antarctica lonnbergi) is part of a complex of skua species, and is the heaviest skua. Skuas are scavengers and predators, frequenting seabird rookeries and seal colonies, always on the lookout for food. This Skua was sitting in a puddle of meltwater on the beach at Whalers Bay, Deception Island, dipping its beak to drink and preening. Elevation: 35 m. Date added to IBC: February 7, 2019.
