A close-up view of an immature male perched opening its bill, and with slow motion and stop action, shows where the tongue.....attaches to the hyoid apparatus (see author's notes).The hyoid apparatus is a forked structure made of a number of small bones and connected muscles, that wraps around the entire skull, coils around the eyes, and controls the tongue extension well beyond the tip of the bill. The closest similar structure is found in woodpeckers. Elevation: 24 m. Date added to IBC: June 23, 2016.
