Media notes
King Penguin ‘Oakum Boy’ in moult, preening. Volunteer Point is one of the few places on the Falkland Islands that has a King Penguin rookery – on grassland. Juvenile King Penguins are known as ‘Oakum Boys’, because old time seamen thought that their fine brown down looked like the oakum used for caulking wooden ships. This bird was moulting into its adult plumage in November. Elevation: 140 m. Date added to IBC: January 11, 2018.
