A family of Pink-eared Ducks loafing in the afternoon sun. The pink ear on Pink-eared Ducks (Malacorhynchus membranaceus) is virtually impossible to see at long range – it is a tiny small pink tuft above and behind the eye. Pink-eared Ducks feed mainly on planktonic material with their bizarre, spoon-shaped bills. The sexes are similar – females are slightly paler and smaller than males. This family of Pink-eared Ducks was loafing and preening in the afternoon sun on a grassy bank near the water at Herdsman Lake, near the city of Perth in Western Australia. The smaller female is on the left, the male standing behind, and the pink ear is not visible on the four large ducklings lying on the grass. Elevation: 7 m. Date added to IBC: September 27, 2019.
